South Africa
Given the grave situation in South Africa with HIV/AIDS,
the South African Department of Health and USAID are
working together, through the TASC/South Africa project,
to improve the national condom distribution program.
The project will review and refine condom procurement,
distribution, and quality assurance.
The goal of the project is to design and implement
a system to ensure an uninterrupted supply of condoms
to all health facilities in the country, as well as
to NGOs, CBOs, and other relevant organizations. The
project will build the Department of Health’s
capacity to design, maintain, and utilize an effective
logistics system at both the national and provincial
levels.
This massive project covers roughly 150 million condoms
per year and will work in the following areas:
- Systems development of the condom logistics
management system, including forecasting, procurement,
shipment, warehousing, and distribution.
- Quality assurance by developing protocols
for ensuring consistent quality in condom procurement
and instituting quality testing systems for procured
condoms.
- Training in logistic management systems,
including the development of curricula and manuals,
and the coordination of cascade training to provincial
and district levels.
- Monitoring the logistics management information
system (LMIS) that regularly tracks distribution,
stocks, and predicts future needs.
